O presente trabalho tem como objetivo o uso de modelos para melhorar o controle do processo de secagem de madeira serrada, tomando como base a Lei de Fourier para modelar o fluxo de calor e a 2a Lei de Fick para o fluxo de massa. Para a avaliação do modelo de Fourier foram utilizadas tábuas de Pinus taeda L. de 46mm de espessura, submetidas às temperaturas de bulbo seco de 40o C, 60o C e 80o C e velocidades do ar de 3,5, 4,7 e 6,8 m/s. Em todos os ensaios a umidade relativa foi mantida em 100%. No caso da aplicação da 2a Lei de Fick foram utilizadas tábuas de Pinus elliottii Engelm de 36mm de espessura, submetidas as mesmas temperaturas, no entanto com uma velocidade do ar de 3,0m/s e uma umidade relativa de 40%. Os resultados dos ensaios indicaram que a relação de Chilton-Colburn permite determinar os coeficientes convectivos de calor e massa. O coeficiente convectivo de calor pode ser determinado do número de Nusselt, considerando um fluxo ao longo de um duto de seção retangular baseado no diâmetro hidráulico. O coeficiente de difusão aumentou com a temperatura e diminuiu com o teor de umidade da madeira. A solução do modelo de Fourier representou melhor o comportamento experimental dos dados quando o valor de Biot tendendo ao infinito é considerado. Isto indica que a resistência à transferência de calor do material é bem superior que a convecção de calor do fluido na superfície. Com base nos resultados obtidos concluiu-se, que o modelo de Fourier permite estimar com boa precisão a temperatura no centro da madeira e que o modelo difusivo, baseado na segunda Lei de Fick, permite predizer os gradientes de umidade e a taxa de perda de umidade, durante o processo de secagem. Os resultados também indicam que o gradiente de umidade das peças gerado pelo modelo pode ser utilizado na prática para ajustar o processo de secagem de madeira serrada e, com base nisto, mitigar rachaduras superficiais. Este aspecto em particular pode ser explorado em mais detalhes em estudos futuros.
This study was designed to develop a model to improve the control of drying process of sawnwood. The model is based on the Fourier Law, in dealing with heat transfer, and on the second Fick Law for the mass transfer. When developing the model based on the Fourier Pinus taeda L. boards, 36 mm thick, were used. For this experiment it was used temperatures of 40o C, 60o C e 80o C, and air velocities of 3.5, 4.7 and 6.8 m/s. In all trials the relative humidity was maintained at 100%. In dealing the experiments for the application of the second Fick Law 36mm thick boards of Pinus elliottii Engelm were used, and the same temperatures of the previous experiment were used. In this case air velocity was 3.0 m/s and the relative humidity was 40%. The results obtained pointed out that the Chilton- Colburn relations allows to obtain the convective values for mass and heat. The heat convective coefficient can be determined from the Nusselt number, considering the flow in a rectangular section based on a hydraulic diameter. The diffusion coefficient increase with temperature and decrease with the moisture content of the boards. The solution of the Fourier model presented a better result when the Biot value tending to infinite is considered. This points out that the limitation of heat transfer of the material is more important than the convection of heat from the air to the surface. Based on the results of this study can be concluded that the model based on the Fourier Law is a good tool to estimate internal temperature of the boards, and that the diffusion model (based on the second Fick Law) is appropriated to define the moisture gradient and to estimate the moisture contend reduction during drying. The results also pointed out that moisture gradient generated by the model has practical application, and can be used to adjust the wood drying process, and mitigate superficial checks a common defect when drying lumber. The practical applications of the model can be further explored in future studies.
