According to its owners, the Forest of Seu Nico (FSN) from the Viçosa municipality, Minas Gerais, Brazil, never has been logged and is therefore considered a primary forest. Nevertheless, the forest patch suffered impacts due to selective wood and non-timber extraction, fragmentation and isolation. Aim of this study was to test if the FSN, despite impacts, preserved characteristics of primary forests, which are elevated percentages of non-pioneer (>90%), animal-dispersed (>80 %), understory (>50%) and endemic species (~40%). For that, all trees with diameter at breast height equal or major than 3.2 cm within a plot of 100 x 100 m were identified. With 218 tree species found within this hectare, the FSN’s species richness is outstanding for the region. The percentages of non-pioneer (92 %), animal-dispersed (85 %), understory (55 %) and endemic species (39.2 %) from the FSN fulfill the criteria proposed for primary forest. Therefore, we conclude that the FSN maintained its characteristics as a primary forest which highlights its importance for the conservation of biotic resources in the region, where similar fragments are lacking or not described yet.; Segundo seus proprietários, a Floresta de Seu Nico (FSN), situada no Município de Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brasil, nunca sofreu corte raso, porém é considerada floresta primária.

Lecythis idatimon Aubl., Rinorea guianensis Aubl. e Eschweilera coriacea (DC.) S.A. Mori. A diferença na estrutura da população revela estratégias distintas para a produção de flores e, consequentemente, na dispersão de frutos e sementes.; The objective of this work was to study the effect of topography and rainfall in the structure of trees and litter production in a tropical rain forest in the National Forest of Caxiuanã. Were delimited three tranches of 1.000 m 2 in each topographic levels (lowland, intermediate and plateau) and identified all individuals and collection of litter. For the three levels was recorded a total of 124 species belonging to 33 botanical families. The three families with higher importance value index for topographies of lowland and intermediate were Sapotaceae, Lecythidaceae and Chrysobalanaceae and for plateau were Lecythidaceae, Sapotaceae and Chrysobalanaceae. The species Lecythis idatimon Aubl., Rinoria guianensis Aubl. e Eschweilera coriacea (DC.) S.A. Mori. showed the greatest importance value indices for the three topographies. The seasonality affects significantly the litter production, showing the highest values at the end of rainy season and early dry season. The environmental stimulus for the fall of the leaves is mainly due to decrease in relative humidity, justified by the need of the plants to increase photosynthetic efficiency. The difference in population structure show strategies for flower production, and consequently the dispersion of fruits and seeds.

We aimed to characterize the floristic and structural composition of the tree component of an area contaminated by Hovenia dulcis Thunb., to determine the relationship of the distribution of the invasive species to the successional stage, and to verify the relationship between the presence of invasive species with patterns of diversity and community structure. The study was conducted in a riparian area of the water reservoir of Machadinho Hydreletric power plant, in SC state. The survey was conducted in 48 plots of 200 m2 each, arranged in eight block. Within plots, all trees with circumference at breast height (cbh) greater or equal to 15.7 cm were measured (cbh) and identified. The data were analyzed through the phytosociological descriptors, the biological invasion index (BII), diversity index, non-metric multidimensional scalling, permutational multivariate analysis of variance, analysis of indicator species, and the c-score index. A total of 66 species was sampled, with the highest relative importance value (IV) for Ocotea puberula (Rich.) Nees (10.79%). H. dulcis ranked in seventh position of IV (4.04%) and the BII was 0.47. The blocks were classified into intermediate and advanced successional groups, with floristic and structural differences (p = 0.001) between them. H. dulcis was associated with areas with an earlier successional stage, with lower diversity and a community with no structure, in relation to segregation of species within plots. We conclude that the invasion by H. dulcis did not occur homogeneously in the area, being influenced by ecological characteristics of the resident community.

Análise do efeito da sazonalidade sobre o rendimento do óleo essencial das folhas de Nectandra grandiflora Nees; Analysis of the seasonality effect on the essential oil yield of leaves of Nectandra grandiflora Nees
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of seasonal variability on the yield of essential oil (EO) present in leaves of Nectandra grandiflora Nees and as well as to determine whether the drying process at room temperature of the plant material influences the yield of this EO. Plant material was collected from 12 individuals over a year and EO was extracted by hydrodestillation separately from fresh and dried leaves. Simultaneously, 20 g of fresh leaves was taken to stove at 40 oC to constant weight for determination of moisture content. This procedure was performed for each collection individually. The yield of EO in leaves (% w/w) was calculated for fresh plant material based on dry matter, determined by considering the moisture content, as well as for the material dried at room temperature. The yields were analyzed by Tukey test (P<0.05). Results showed that the content of EO in the leaves showed seasonal variability with the highest production detected in spring (0.75 ± 0.06%) and the lowest yield in winter (0.39 ± 0.02%). Thereby, it is recommended that the leaves of N. grandiflora be collected in spring, aiming to increase EO yield. Additionally, no loss of EO content during the drying process at room temperature occurred thus this postharvest procedure could be adopted without compromising the extractive yield.
