This work had as objective to quantify the reforestation for water retention in the Palmital Stream watershed, County of Jaboticabal, SP, by using the methodology of compensatory forestation for retention of water in watersheds. This methodology esteems the retention of water in watersheds considering the world medium value of destiny of the water in the hydrologic cycle, the use/occupation of the soil (forest, pasture and agriculture) and its permeability. The watershed in this study presents an area of 10,625.21 ha, being 237.75 ha at forest, 467.01 ha in pasture and 9,237.57 ha in agriculture. The medium values of the permeability identifiedinthesoilswereof94.81mmh-1 in forest, 8.99 mm h-1 in pasture and 36.01 mm h-1 in agriculture (sugar cane). Considering that should infiltrateinthesoil20.55%of the water that precipitates on the watershed, and, that the losses of water in forest areas is considered standard, the total estimated volume to compensate the excessive loss that occur in the areas of pasture and agriculture is 12.21 million of m³/ano. The compensatory forestation to retain that volume of loss should contemplate an area of 942.73 ha (8.87% of the area of the watershed). The reforestation can be priority in permanent conservation area or in areas of Legal Reserve.

Some researches indicate that the soil moisture and type are the soil variables that present the most influence on the tillage operations(BAVERet al., 1972; CASSEL, 1979; McKYES, 1985; SRIVASTAVA et al., 1993). The large use of the subsoiler in the minimum tillage and the absence of scientific study about the evaluation of the operational performance of the subsoilers motivated the present study, which had as objective to evaluate the operational performance of a subsoiler with parabolic tine as a function of the soil structure, clay and moisture content of three Latosols: a sandy clay loam dystrophic Red Latosol (LVd-1) and two clay dystrophic Red Latosols (LVd-2 and LVd-3). The subsoiler was evaluated according to soil disturbed volume (SDV), work depth (WD), work width (WW), average speed (AS), theoretical work capacity (TWC) and efficiency(E). Between the moisture content limits studied, higher operational performance (SDV, WD, AS, TWC, and E) was obtained under low moisture content. The block structure of the LVd-2 and the high clay content of the LVd-3 resulted in larger SDV (when the soils were dryer) and larger E (when the soils were damper). The LVd-1 was the soil that presented smaller result variations, because its support capacity was more stable than that of the other studied Latosols.

Diversidade genética de uma população “ex situ” de Caesalpinia echinata Lam.; Genetic diversity of “ex situ” population of Caesalpinia echinata Lam
Giudice Neto, João Del; Sebbenn, Alexandre Magno; Kageyama, Paulo Yoshio
The purposes of this research were to assess the level of variation and genetic structure of “ex situ” Caesalpinia echinata Lam. (brazilwood) population, located in State of São Paulo, Brazil. The genetic diversity, inbreeding and coancestry coefficient were estimated by isozyme markers. Two generations were used in the analysis, adult trees and their progenies. C. echinata in the arboretum shows high level of genetic diversity compared to other tropical tree species, with 2.00 to 2.27 average number of alleles per locus (Â), 66.7% of polymorphic loci (P95%), 0.248 to 0.291 of observed heterozygosity (Ĥo) and 0.298 to 0.321 of expected heterozygosity (Ĥe). Wright’s fixationindex(f) was higher in adult trees than in the correspondent families (0.169 and 0.095). Selection against homozygous trees was argued the cause of lower Wright’s fixation index in the progenies. In adult trees the average coancestry coefficient(θxy) was 0.168. The high levels of inbreeding and coancestry detected in adult trees of the arboretum may be imputed to genetic drift in the foundation population process.
