The aim of this research was to evaluate different adjustments of taper functions for the estimates of the variables diameter, height and volume using the coefficients obtained from the adjustment obtained on the original model and the expression of hi and di variables. Evaluated were the taper models of Baldwin, Demaerschalk, Kozak e Ormerod of Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis stem. The estimates of diameter and height obtained from original model (relation (di/dap)) were compared with the estimates obtained from the expressions of di and hi rearranged on the original model. The estimate of volume was compared by integrating of the original model and the diameter expression. The choice of the best model and the different ways of adjust were realized by graphical analysis of errors, determination coefficient (R²), estimated standard error (Syx(%)), bias (V), average of the differences (MD) and standard deviation of the differences (DPD). The Demaerschalk model was the most accurate for the three variables for the different ways of adjustment. Considering the estimate of diameter and height, the adjustment equations for diameter and height variables have proved more accurate while the estimate of volume was more accurate with the integration of the expressions of diameter.

However, the selection of individuals to be removed is a complex process which involves technicians skilled in the identification of various variables in the field and making the most appropriate decision. By means of this process one can obtain heterogeneous responses and the lack of technical team standardization may lead to prejudicial choices for forest management. Therefore, the aim of the study was applying a multi-criteria simulated annealing metaheuristic for the selection of trees to be removed in selective thinning, considering the diametric structure of the forest stand, height, canopy occupation, crown projected area and the tree quality. The study was conducted on a forest stand of Eucalyptus grandis containing 336 trees. Ten scenarios were simulated, covering different weights in the multi-criteria function to be minimized. The results show that the metaheuristic is capable of selecting individuals for selective thinning, presenting advantages such as improved standardization of choices using predetermined criteria, independent of the probability of selecting trees at the stand level. It was concluded that the use of the method will become more promising after using the efficient data acquirement technology, while always being a method for decision making.

The present study aimed to investigate the relation between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and estimated biomass (t.ha-1) using allometric equations in an area of caatinga vegetation. The goal was to develop a linear regression model for estimating woody biomass of caatinga vegetation based on remote sensing techniques. NDVI data was obtained from the scene 217/66 LANDSAT 5 TM sensor, while in situ biomass was estimated in twenty 10 x 20 m plots. For this, each plot was georeferenced and all living woody plants with a diameter at breast height (DBH) equal to or greater than 3 cm were identified and had their height and DBH measured and their biomass estimated from allometric equations. Average plant density was 780 ind.ha-1 ranging from 150 to 1900 ind.ha-1. The species Mimosa tenuiflora showed higher importance value index, and greater biomass, 10.11 t.ha-1. NDVI values ranged between 0.4161 and 0.7067 and were positively correlated with the estimated woody biomass values, which ranged from 5.93 to 60.74 t.ha-1, with Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.84 and p <0.01. The linear regression between NDVI and estimated woody biomass showed a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.70 and standard deviation of 8.43 t.h-1. The prediction error for woody biomass estimation, obtained by the method of cross-validation was equal to 31%, considered suitable for a nondestructive estimation method.

The efficiency of early selection was assessed in a test of 94 Eucalyptus urophylla clones using the variables diameter at breast height and tree height, evaluated in the municipality of Guanhães – Minas Gerais. The procedure Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) - Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) was used to estimate genetic parameters. The direct and indirect gains by early selection were also estimated at age three years for a response at age six; when the 5 best clones were selected when compared to the experimental controls,. The individual coefficients of broad-sense heritability were 53% and 58%, in the two years of evaluation. The predicted gains by early selection at age three years were in agreement of 97.9% for DBH and 95.7% for tree height in relation with the results after six years growth. When selecting at a rate of 5%; 80% of the selected plants were the same in the selection for DAP and 60% for plant height, in the selection at both ages. This finding shows that this procedure is reliable for E. urophylla and can be recommended to be used more routinely in eucalyptus breeding programs, to maximize the efficiency of the extremely time and cost-consuming breeding experiments.
