The detailed knowledge of the total solar radiation that reaches a surface is fundamental for the planning of the forest activities. A few research works cited in the literature have considered the topographic effect of the region to determine the solar radiation balance (Rn), in which, depending on the predominant topographic relief of the region, significant errors can be obtained. This study was carried out to estimate the Rn considering the slope aspect of the terrain for eucalypt forest plantation, and to compare this estimates with and flat terrain areas. The simulation was carried out for the years of 2001 and 2002 in Rio Doce watershed. The hillsides with northward, northeast and the northwest orientation presented increases in Rn in relation to the estimate for flat horizontal surface, because at this time of the year, the sun, in its apparent movement, tape place north of the watershed. However, the hillsides with south, southeast and southwest orientation, presented reduction in Rn when compared with the conditions of flat topography. The hillsides inclination influenced in the magnitude of the differences between gain of energies and loss Rn. The hillsides inclinations faced northward, the northwest and northeast, had greaters variations, witch increased Rn of up to 40%, in July. It was demonstrated that exist important influence of the different slopes and aspects of the hillsides terrain over the total daily radiation balance.

Fenologia de espécies lenhosas da caatinga do Seridó, RN; Phenology of woody species in the caatinga of Seridó, RN, Brazil
The phenology of 13 shrub and tree species in the caatinga of Seridó was observed for two years to determine if, in this open vegetation, poor in species, phenophases occur throughout all the seasons. Ten plants of each species were observed every 15 days to register leaf formation and fall, flowering and fruiting. Leaf formation was strongly influenced by rainfall in 11 species, which remained leafless during different periods of the dry seasons. This influence was most noticeable in the rapid leaf flush and fall following sporadic rain events within the dry season. Two species, Capparis flexuosa and Erythroxylum pungens , remained with leaves the whole year. Along the two years, only for short periods (about 15 days), there were no plants flowering and fruiting, but both peaked in the rainy season. The patterns were more complex at the species level than at the community level. Erythroxylum pungens did not flower and Aspidosperma pyrifolium and Tabebuia impetiginosa flowered only once, along the two years, while Mimosa acutistipula flowered five times and Jatropha mollissima and Pithecellobium foliolosum flowered four times. In four species (Amburana cearensis, Anadenanthera colubrina, Pithecellobium foliolosum and Tabebuia impetiginosa), fruiting did not occur in all plants that flowered, while in the other species all those that flowered also produced fruits. In spite of the almost continual fruit production, during several periods, only dry fruits were produced.

The objective of the present work was to compare the orbital images from the CBERS 2, IRS- P6 and the Quickbird satellites, for the mapping of the stadiums of ecological succession, using different methods of classification of orbital images. The study area included the native forest reserves of the Macedônia forest project, located in the cities of Bugre and Ipaba, between the parallels 19o19’00”S and 19o24’30”S and the meridians 42o27’00”W and 42o21’00”W, Minas Gerais state. The visual, per region and pixel-based classifications were used. In order to evaluate the classification accuracy of each method, a matrix of errors was generated and the Kappa index was calculated. The Z test was used in order to test the statistical significance of the difference between two Kappa indices. Altogether, the best results were the classifications obtained in the visual and region-based methods, with values of kappa higher than those for pixel-based classifications. The image resulting from the fusion of IRS and CBERS images, which were classified through the method of regions, obtained the best Kappa index, and was in the level considered as good. The problems of separation among the classes resulted in classifications with a low degree of accuracy. This can be explained by the spectral similarity present between the targets (initial, medium and advanced stadiums), the small variation among the numerical values of the pixels, the existence of overlapping among classes and the low spectral resolution of sensors.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the procedure adaptive sampling procedure used in forest inventories for species with low population density and aggregated spatial distribution pattern, in relation to procedures normally used in forest inventories. Thus, a population was simulated in a 90 ha forest, subdivided into 100 units (N = 100) with areas of 9,000 m2 each, presenting 44 individuals of a given species, and submitted to three sampling procedures: simple random sampling; systematic sampling and adaptive cluster sampling, with initial samples selected through simple random sampling and systematic sampling. After analyses, it was verified that the systematic sampling was the best procedure to estimate the total number of individuals of the studied species. Besides, it was observed the need of further investigation on the effect of the size and form of plots, the aggregation scale and size of the population, and their combinations, on the efficiency of the estimators of the adaptive cluster sampling.
