The growth rate of trees dbh > 35cm of a Lecythis lurida (Miers) Mori (jarana) population was evaluated in a 700ha area of natural forest after logging and applying silvicultural treatments in the municipality of Paragominas, in Pará state. Seven treatments were established: in three of them climbers were cut and competitor trees were girdled after logging; in two of them only climber cutting was performed; in one of them the forest was logged; and one of them remained with no silvicultural intervention. The yearly diameter increment of the species was calculated from 2005 to 2009, considering also the crown shape of trees and the intensity of light on tree crown. Growth rate of Lecythis lurida was higher in T3 (only climber cutting)’differing statistically from the T7 (unlogged forest). In the treatments T1, T2 and T3 where climber were cut and competitors-trees were girdled, diameter increment of the species was similar to the forest that was logged but not treated, although the trees with good shape and complete crowns receiving full light had high increment in those treatments. Therefore, one can infer that five years were not enough to conclude on the effects of the silvicultural treatments over the species growth rate.

O estabelecimento de faixas de interpretação com teores de nutrientes adequados para noni se faz necessário para auxiliar as discussões de futuros estudos de adubação e nutrição da cultura.; Noni fruit has been used since antiquity for treatment of many diseases such as allergy, arthritis, asthma, cancer, depression, diabetes, digestion, hypertension, and insomnia and is used as food supplement. Although these properties and its intercontinental adaptability, information about nutrient exigency and crop management is still little frequent in international and national literature. In this direction an experiment was carried out, during the period of July/2009 to July/2010, in São Luis, Maranhão state, Brazil, in order to evaluate effects of manure and potassium fertilization of the soil on mineral composition in leaves dry matter of noni plants. The treatments were arranged in randomized blocks 2 x 4 referring to absence and presence potassium fertilization (130 kg ha -1 K 2 O) in soil with bovine manure levels (0, 1.7, 6.6 e 11.6 kg plant -1 ) applied in the area of plant projection . From the results, except in calcium and magnesium, the interaction bovine manure x K 2 O proportioned increment on the content of other macro and micronutrients in dry matter leaf of noni plants. The establishment of levels interpreting nutrient content suitable for noni is needed to assist the discussions of future studies of fertilization and crop nutrition.

S.A. Mori (Lecythidaceae). Para o período considerado, a área basal parece estar se recuperando adequadamente.; The aim of this study was to analyze and to compare the floristic composition and horizontal structure of managed forest (FM) and unmanaged forest (FNM). A stratified random sampling was used with 12 plots in the FM and 12 plots in the FNM. In plots of 28 x 350 m, all individuals with circumference at breast height (CAP) greater than or equal to 31.4 cm and smaller than 94.2 cm (inclusion level I) were measured, plots of 28 x 100 m, individuals with ≤ 94.2 cm CAP <157.1 cm (inclusion level II), plots of 28 x 250 m individuals with CAP ≥ 157.1 m (inclusion level III). In both forests 216 species were found, distributed in 44 botanical families. The FNM had a higher diversity index of Shannon-Weaver (H ‘) (H’ = 4.47). The floristic composition, in the FM did not change significantly during the forest management. However, there were significant changes in richness and basal area between FM and FNM because of the harvesting done which resulted in the removal of individuals in commercial classes and also to the damage caused to the remaining trees. The most important species in ecological FNM were RinoreaguianensisAubl (Violaceae), Pouteriabilocularis (H. Winkler) Baehni (Sapotaceae) and Sclerolobiumpaniculatum Vogel (Fabaceae). In FM, were RinoreaguianensisAubl (Violaceae), Manilkarahuberi (Ducke) Chevalier (Sapotaceae) and Eschweileracoriacea (DC.) S.A.Mori (Lecythidaceae). For the period considered, the basal area seems to be recovering properly.

A faixa ótima de temperatura entre 25 a 35°C aumenta a velocidade e reduz o tempo médio de germinação de sementes de Dalbergia cearensis, tanto para o escuro quanto para luz.; The knowledge about the germination behavior of a plant species is major important to the adoption of the techniques that aim its spreading. The work analyzed the seed germination process of Dalbergia cearensis Ducke in the presence and absence of light, that was subjected to constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 °C and alternating temperatures of 20 - 45 °C, all under a photoperiod of 12 hours and continuous darkness. The variables evaluated were: the percentage, the speed and the medium time of the germination. The seeds germinated in the presence and absence of light and the higher percentages of germination were 25, 30 and 35 °C. Thus, to trigger the germination process of this species, there is no need of exposure or absence of light. So they can be characterized as neutral photoblastic seeds. No germination was observed at alternating temperatures of 20° C to 45 °C. The optimum temperature range between 25 to 35 °C increases speed and reduces the average time of germination of Dalbergia cearensis for both the dark and for light.
